Top 10 Favourite Albums of 2020

 Hi Everyone!

Hope you're all doing well! 2020 has been a very strange year for every single one of us.

One of the positives to come out of this year that's helped me get through is the really excellent music that has been released throughout. Some artists used lockdown as an oppurtunity to get creative!

Even I re-arranged and re-recorded an old song of mine which you can stream here (or download here) 😉

Anyway, here is a list of my Top 10 favourite albums of 2020:

10. Serpentine Prison by Matt Berninger

The debut solo album from Matt of The National.
Not too disimilar from his work with The National but this appears to take more influence from some of the great singer-songwriters of the late 60's/early 70's (think Bob Dylan, Neil Young, etc).

Standout Tracks: Serpentine Prison, Loved So Little, One More Second

9. Unfollow The Rules by Rufus Wainwright

This is Rufus doing what he does best, writing beautifully crafted songs.
Reminds me stylistically of his 2007 'Release The Stars' album.

Standout Tracks: Peaceful Afternoon, Alone Time, Early Morning Madness

8. How I'm Feeling Now by Charli XCX

A totally unexpected lockdown album entirely created in just a few weeks!
One of Charli's more experimental (and personal) creations that also features some bangers!

Standout Tracks: I Finally Understand, Visions, Enemy

7. After Hours by The Weeknd

If you follow me on Twitter or Instagram, you may have seen that I had actually predicted this would be my number 1 favourite album of the year (sorry Abel!) but it's still amazing nonetheless!

Abel's best project to date in my opinion, excellent concept throughout and undoubtedly features some of his most important songs.

Standout Tracks: After Hours, Blinding Lights, Hardest To Love

6. DISCO by Kylie Minogue

Queen Kylie doing what she does best and her most consistant album in a while.
There's not a single dull track on here, it's just bop after bop!

Standout Tracks: Dancefloor Darling, Real Groove, Miss A Thing

5. Fetch The Bolt Cutters by Fiona Apple

It's hard to find the words to describe just how incredible this is!
Easily my favourite Fiona album to date.

There's so much buzz around it and it's become one of those "you need to hear this" albums so, if you haven't heard this yet, go put it on now! Believe the hype!

Standout Tracks: Heavy Balloon, I Want You To Love Me, Shameika

4. Chromatica by Lady Gaga

Despite placing at number 4, I'd say this has probably been my most listened to album of the year. There's so many bangers on it and it's definitely a return to form for Gaga.

Standout Tracks: Babylon, 1000 Doves, Sour Candy, Rain On Me (obviously 😂)

3. Folklore by Taylor Swift

Must admit, I had fallen off the Taylor train around the time she released 'Reputation' but this took me by total surprise! I wasn't expecting her music to take this direction anytime soon and I hope this is what she sticks with because this album (and 'Evermore') really highlight just how gifted she is... and to add to that, both albums were entirely created over lockdown!

P.S. 'Evermore' equally deserves to share this spot, I've just chosen to include it simply because it's been released right at the end of 2020

Standout Tracks: Invisible String, The Last Great American Dynasty, Exhile

2. What's Your Pleasure? by Jessie Ware

This album is soooooo sexy... like sooooo f***ing sexy.
Very much a stylistic change for Jessie and I'm hoping it's a route she sticks with.
This is extremely classy pop songwriting and every track is a bop!

Standout Tracks: Spotlight, What's Your Pleasure? Remember Where You Are

1. SAWAYAMA by Rina Sawayama

This is the wildest debut album by any artist I've ever come across and I'm totally onboard for the ride!

An extremely eclectic mixture of early 2000's inspired pop, heavy metal, 80's/90's R'n'B (and so much more) that still manages to retain it's signature identity and be extremely consistent.
This is another one of those albums in particular that you must hear. If you don't know Rina just yet, you will do very soon!

Standout Tracks: XS, Who's Gonna Save You Now? Love Me 4 Me

Thank you so much for reading this!
What have been your favourite albums this year? Let me know!

Wishin you all the best for 2021! Stay safe and speak soon!

Josh 😀
